Office wear is already a lousy fashion statement. While every office is different and there’s often a wide range of what’s considered “acceptable” choosing fashion statements for spring/fall when you’re stuck with a dress code isn’t easy. Not to mention the dreaded daily temperature swings making it even harder to pick what work clothes you can wear.

Layering

Here’s the first secret – layering.

The key to having office wear that is functional and fashionable is to layer. By adding sneaky layers such as a pair of leggings under a maxi rather than tights you’ll be warmer but your outfit will look just the same. Swap a cami for a thicker summer strap top, for example. Layering works because while it’s freezing in the morning and hot in the afternoon you can simply take on or take off as needed.

Frugal tip: You probably already have cami tops and leggings, since they’re underneath no need to buy new ones!

The Minimum

A plain shirt and smart jacket is the most flexible of all work clothes, no matter the season. If you haven’t invested in these yet this is where your money should go. Choose good quality brands that will last and cuts that are not going to be dated – no shoulder pads, frills, fluffs etc. The benefit of a shirt and jacket is that you can also add a cardigan underneath or a sleeveless sweater if you’re cold in the morning. Choose colors that are simple and neutral so they can be paired with other things in your wardrobe.

Frugal tip: Consider thrifting the shirt. Don’t skimp on a well fitting jacket but most shirts are pretty similar so you can thrift a nice one easily.

The Showstopper

Invest in color and accessories. This season tassels are in so unless you have a job where tasseled earrings are a no for safety then get at least one pair, the funkier the better. By having popping accessories they will eclipse a plain jacket and shirt while still making you work appropriate. If your clothes are neutrals then go bold – red, orange, cobalt with the accessories.

Frugal tip: Check boutique stores and markets and “cheapo” stores for cheap, single-season, stylish accessories.

The Shoes

Spring/Fall can be tough on your footwear with the weather being hot/cold/wet/dry or all four in a day. Opt for booties over boots as they won’t add so much layering to your legs and come in a variety of colors. Remember, this Season’s colors are red – so red or a brown/beige bootie should be perfect.

Frugal Tip: Slouch boots are also back, if you already have soft calf or thigh boots slide them down to make a slouch without buying a new pair!
