Home Remedies for the Flu

This year’s flu season is epidemic. The flu shot is only 10% effective, and with cases being more deadly than ever people are looking for any solution to help. The doctors are not only prescribing conventional medications, they’re telling people to do whatever they can. Most of us can’t afford the time it takes to get over the flu let alone the prescriptions to treat it. That’s why many old wive’s remedies have become popular, and there’s truth in some of them too.

Before you Get Sick

Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables has some protective elements for your immune system. Vitamin C, Zinc, and a healthy dose of other microminerals are all essential parts of getting your immune system going. Your immune system is constantly under attack from bacteria and viruses, not just the flu so this is something you should be doing anyway. Choose foods that are high in those like Broccoli, oysters, seaweed, oranges, strawberries, and bananas.

The First Signs

The moment you feel pressure or a sniffle it’s time to act. Most symptoms appear 2-3 days after infection which means the virus has already built up in your system and it’s practically too late. If you want to stop this thing before it gets a hold of you then you need to start upping your fluids. There’s an old saying “feed a fever, starve a cold”. If you have a fever, it’s the flu. Eat healthy, lots of liquids and start taking supplements for C daily, and zinc every 4 hours. With your fluids start drinking tea. Alternate Echinacea, and a mixture of ginger, cayenne, and RAW honey. The Raw honey is very important because it contains antiviral elements, antibacterial elements, and antimicrobial elements. In addition to this you can also add colloidal silver into your sick tea but it can upset the stomach.

Here’s your secret ingredient – oregano oil.

Oregano is considered to be the strongest antibacterial and antiviral around and because it’s not overused like commercial antibiotics doctors often use it in cases of drug resistance. It smells like pizza and tastes awful. You’ll want to be using it on your pillow, and doing a tea with 3 drops mixed with honey (I suggest peppermint to ease the taste) at least 4-6 times a day.

The Sick Bed

If that hasn’t worked it’s time to step it up. You’ll want to prevent anyone else from getting sick and being reinfected yourself so some surgical masks will help. Wear one. It’s often too late by this time so you need to do this as soon as you feel ill. Stay out of the kitchen. Don’t touch anything and if you do have to touch it wipe it down with an antibacterial wipe afterwards, this includes everything in the bathroom and door handles. Your cough can spread up to 9 feet so it’s important not to let that cough or sneeze out for someone else to touch. Stay in your room as much as possible rather than any communal areas and wash your hands often.

To start your treatment continue doing everything from above. Then, slice an onion and place one slice in each sock on the bottom of your foot. Onions are high in sulphur which has antibacterial elements, it’s also full of antioxidants and flavinoids which boost the immune system.

Get a nice broth and then add lots of garlic, lots of onions, and lots of cayenne pepper. It doesn’t matter if it’s chicken or any other broth as long as it’s strong in those three ingredients. The cayenne will clear your sinuses so they run, the garlic and onions both have strong antibiotic and antiviral elements in them. And you can liberally add some oregano too, preferably fresh.

Add pineapple juice to your fluids. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain which dissolves protein. It will literally dissolve the cells inside your throat and take any bacteria with it.

The Cure

Viruses are only cured by two things – antivirals and time. Since you need to support your own immune system as much as possible rest and sleep really are the best medicine. All of the above works to make sure your immune system is functioning as best possible but there’s not a lot you can do asides from take some Tamiflu to stop the flu once you’ve got it. Most over the counter items just mask symptoms. None of the home remedies have been shown to be harmful and while they may have a placebo effect in most cases science does support their being effective at helping you once you’ve gotten sick. There is no “cure” for the flu, and because the virus mutates so much there probably never will be. The best you can do is simply take care of yourself once you get sick.
