How to Shop Smart for the Holidays

smart shopping - How to Shop Smart for the Holidays

Christmas is expensive, and when you’ve got to buy multiple gifts it can get even more costly. There’s a reason stores spend all year waiting for Black Friday, they’re waiting to get that money in because holiday shopping kicks in with a vengeance.

How to Shop Smart for the Holidays

Start Early

It’s never to early to start holiday shopping, and there are people who start the year before! It’s estimated that people who leave their holiday shopping later will spend a massive $250 more on their gifts than those who spread out gift buying and start early. There’s also plenty of sales during the year where you can pick up the perfect item and just store it for a few months.

Don’t do it all at once

There’s an effect that researchers at Stanford University have dubbed the Shopping Momentum. How often have you bought one thing only to end up with 10 more before you realize it. Often buying one thing unlocks the purse strings so you’re more likely to buy additional items. Take a break between people/items so you don’t buy everything you see and to make sure you don’t buy more than you’re supposed to for each person.

Marketplace

Many social media outlets now have marketplace options. These are almost like swap-meets so you can find half price gift cards, new items, and handmade items which make great gifts. You can shop from home and you don’t have to worry about shipping since you can collect locally. They’re also cheaper than going to stores.

Don’t Touch

A study by UCLA determined that you’re more likely to be willing to pay up to 10% more for the item (and almost twice as likely to buy a sale item) if you touch it or pick it up. Many shoppers don’t even realize they’re doing this when they handle merchandise but once it’s in your hands it makes putting it back that much harder. There’s lots of eye catching holiday displays begging to be handled but just keep your hands to yourself so that possessive feeling doesn’t kick in and you won’t buy unnecessarily.

Use Apps

There are several apps like Ebates, BeFrugal, Ibotta, Hukkster etc. that offer deals for shopping like money back or updates when a desired item goes on sale. This can save you a ton of money and most of the items can be picked up from the store the same day or the coupon comes right to your phone.
